Pillar Three

Effective AI Interaction

How to communicate with AI so it truly helps — from research questions to manuscript writing.

Five Prompting Techniques

Each technique is grounded in how LLMs work — there's a principled reason for all of them.

1

Assign a Role

Instead of simply asking "how do I edit this?", say "You are a senior editor specializing in physics journals. Please edit the following paragraph." A role causes the model to sample from a specific region of its training data — the quality difference is significant.

2

Show, Don't Tell

Rather than saying "use a concise academic tone," paste a paragraph you consider exemplary and say "rewrite in this style." Demonstration is far more effective than description.

3

Ask It to Think Before Answering

Add "think step by step" at the end of your question. AI is significantly more accurate when it writes out its reasoning process than when it answers directly — especially for logic and analysis tasks.

4

Specify Output Format

If you want a table, say "present this as a table." If you want bullet points, say "use bullet points, each no longer than two lines." AI follows format instructions well — but you need to be explicit.

5

Put the Key Point First

AI weights the beginning of prompts most heavily. If your core constraint or task description is buried in the middle, it may not register. Put the most important instruction in the very first sentence.

Research Workflow: Where Can AI Help?

Four stages, each with practical approaches you can use today.

🔍

Problem Exploration

Use Perplexity AI's Academic mode to quickly identify important papers in your field from the past three years and locate research gaps.

⚠️ Always verify results independently in PubMed or Web of Science.

📚

Literature Review

Upload PDFs to Claude or Elicit and ask it to extract sample sizes, key findings, and study limitations — turning dozens of papers into a comparable table.

📊

Data Analysis

Upload a CSV to ChatGPT's Advanced Data Analysis, ask it to plot correlation heatmaps, identify outliers, and generate a draft Results section.

⚠️ Use a local model for sensitive data.

✍️

Writing & Proofreading

Paste your draft and specify "edit for academic journal style, preserve all original data, only adjust grammar and logical flow." This works far better than asking AI to write from scratch.

MANUSCRIPT EDITING

You are a senior editor of a physics journal. Please edit the following paragraph to match the academic style of Physical Review Letters. Preserve all data and technical terms; only adjust grammar and sentence flow.

LITERATURE SUMMARY

Please read the following abstract and extract: (1) research question, (2) methods, (3) key findings, (4) limitations. Present as a table, each cell no longer than 50 words.

CODE DEBUGGING

The following Python code is producing an error. Please analyze step by step: (1) cause of the error, (2) how to fix it, (3) complete corrected code.
